Music video - How it challenges conventions
CONVENTIONS OF A MUSIC VIDEOS
There are four main conventions of music videos in general, these consist of:
-
Camera shots - a variety of cameramshots are used to in effectve ways such as using close ups to focus on the lead singer so that the audience can gain insight to the singers emotions. extreme close ups shots of the singers lips are used to reflect the words of the artist.
-
Lighting - some music videos are in black and white to emphasise a particular mood or feeling and some have artificial light to give an enhanced look.
-
Editing - jump cuts are dominantly used in music videos alows a transition from one scene to the next.
-
Mise en scene - this referes to the arrangment of performers and props in the video. mise en scene is the most effective way of really potraying the messege of the song to the audience; for example in jhene aiko's music video '3:16 am; where she is in the forest laying down on the branches , this represents the isolation of her feels towards her lover.
NICKI MINAJ
ELLE RANE
I didn't want to challenge many conventions because I wanted to keep my audience wide. However there were a few challenges that I made throughout the video.
One of the first challenges I made was the kind of image I gave my artist in the music video, to fit in the mainstreem and sell variety of the songs. However I wanted to let my artist be herself and feel comfortable in her own image. I also wanted for her to look like a role model for girls and women because especially young adults idolize and look up to artists such Nicki Minaj, therefore I wanted to make sure that the image I used was a good one.
