Genre theorists.

Genre theory is used in the study of films in order to facilitate the categorization of films. Genre is dependent on variou factors such as story line, whom the director is, what are the audience expectations, codes and conventions. In using genre theories we create a short cut in how we are to describe films.

In order to understand Genre theory we may look at several examples and there are...

John Hartley

John Hartley views that genre is limited therefore negative because directors and producers creativity and vision is restricted. as he states " Genre are agents of ideological closure - limit the meaning - potential of given text" This means that the audience, directors and producers's expectation of a genre is limited. Due to the society's ideologies and expectations of specific genres, it limits the producers and the directors creativity and visions as if it is too out of the ordinary, then no one would want to see their product. Stepping out of the box can be seen really risky as if no one wold want to see thier product however they will lose money.

Fowler

However, Fowler agrees with Hartley because he says "The system of generic expectations amounts to a code, by the use of with composition becomes a=more economical" What he menat by that is that the producers either conform, develop codes and conventions according to the audience's expectation. like Hartley, Flower has given a negative view, because he beleives genre is limited.
